In early 2016, Adam Walker envisioned the CRATE concept and sketched an entrepreneurial business community, including the world’s-first Costa coffee shop in a ‘floating’ shipping container.
Adam took this idea to Richard and Mike Stevens at Grangewood Investments, his employer at the time. As entrepreneurs themselves, Richard and Mike saw the potential and provided the site finance and construction capability to make this idea a reality.
In April 2017, CRATE Loughton in Essex opened to a diverse group of entrepreneurs, winning multiple awards for innovation and achieving 90% occupancy within six months. Fuelled by his ambition to roll-out the CRATE concept to the many communities up and down the UK who lack workplaces that empower growth, Adam formed CRATE Places UK in July 2017. He purchased the CRATE IP from Grangewood Investments, leaving Richard, Mike and his old colleagues to own and operate CRATE Loughton.
Great things happen when we think differently.
Adam has been joined by a diverse management team who share his passion for entrepreneurship. Together they have developed the new CRATE brand and enhanced the product and service offering to entrepreneurs, local authorities and regeneration developers. Over the next seven years the CRATE team plan to launch 20 CRATE schemes, supporting 1,000 businesses and 500 apartment homes.
